These parts of my “iced” eBook show a slice of Australia, from alpine Victoria through the Outback up to the alpine rainforest and all the way down to the mountain ranges of Tasmania. Stories of the farmer’s we met, interviews with a wildlife guide and a whole lot of pictures showcasing the gorgeous landscape long before the big fires changed everything.
All the 3d modelling, texturing, lighting and animation was done straight in Modo 902. Compositing and effects was done in Nuke and final colour in DaVinci Resolve. Lettering in Affinity Designer to keep 32-bit consistency in an end-to-end ACES workflow.
The ignition bolts are partially done by hand on top of Xavier Martín’s X_Tesla gizmo (Nukepedia). A great script that everyone should have in their arsenal.
Hype 3 was used for the custom widgets that I then brought over to iBooks Author as packages. To achieve the map drawer overlay I used a custom HTML5 canvas in Hype. You do an edge extend in Nuke to account for the h.264 compression and in Resolve export them side by side. In the canvas script you then multiply the alpha section to the image section for a video with transparency. The animated PNG was over 80MB, so that wasn’t an option. Two JPEG sprite sheets were my other option. But after a couple of page turns, the alpha would always get out of sync. Until we have alphas available in a common consumer facing video format, this seems the best option.
Photo processing (after Foveon rastering) done in Capture One.
